Environmental Tips »

Here at envirocharities we think it is very important to look after our environment, please read the tips below to make sure you are doing your bit.

Use the kettle

Use the kettle to boil water when using it for cooking, instead of heating a pan on the stove. This will be more efficient and will also save you time.

Recycle more

Recycle things yourself, and buy recycled products. Most councils now provide various recycling bins for waste. Why not even start your own recycling collection scheme at work or school.

Switch off

Switch all electrical appliances off at the plug instead of using the 'standby' function. During standby the appliances are still using electricity, and this accounts for 6% of all electricity usage in the home!

Reuse products

Use containers again, buy food, drinks and toiletries in reusable containers, the plastic food containers you get from Chinese take aways make great reusable containers. Why not even ask your school or workplace to provide reusable cups, plates, cutlery etc.

Repair or adapt

Repairing, restoring or adapting a product you already have helps the environment. You may need professional help but it could still be cheaper than something new - half of electrical goods left at tips work or require only very basic repairs.

Cut down packaging

The amount of plastic packaging waste from UK households is about one million tonnes. Buying fruit and vegetables loose could cut your waste drastically. Reuse your shopping bags by taking them with you each time you're shopping and try not to buy drinks in plastic bottles.

Rubbish statistics

Of the waste produced by families, factories and offices, around 83% is buried in the ground at 'landfill sites'. Around 6% is burnt in special power stations to help produce electricity and other forms of power, and 3% is burnt without generating any power. Just 8% is recycled.
